Lake Manyara National Park

Tree-Climbing Lions, Flamingos & Forested Beauty

Tucked between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and a shimmering alkaline lake, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most diverse and compact safari destinations. Though small in size, it offers a remarkable variety of landscapes — from dense groundwater forests and open savannahs to acacia woodlands and swamps.

Top Things to Do in Lake Manyara

The park is famously home to tree-climbing lions, a rare and fascinating behavior found in only a few places in Africa. Large herds of elephants also roam the area, and the lake itself attracts thousands of pink flamingos, pelicans, and other wading birds, especially during the wet season.

Manyara is also an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife for first-time visitors, with sightings of baboons, hippos, buffaloes, giraffes, and rich birdlife possible on a single game drive. Its easy access from Arusha makes it a perfect stop on the way to Ngorongoro or Serengeti.

👉 Recommended For: Short safaris, first-timers, birdwatchers, families
📍 Best Time to Visit: June–October (dry season), or November–March for birdwatching
🚗 Access: 1.5–2 hours from Arusha
