Ol Doinyo Lengai Trek & Lake Natron Adventure: 2 Days to the “Mountain of God”

Climb Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s active volcano, and explore the wild beauty of Lake Natron. This 2-day trek offers adventure, Maasai culture, flamingos, and lava views from the “Mountain of God.”

CLIMB OVERVIEW

This is a challenging, non-technical climb best suited for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness.

Towering over the dramatic Rift Valley landscape at 2,960 meters, Ol Doinyo Lengai — or the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language — is unlike any other volcano on Earth. It’s the world’s only active volcano that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare, fast-flowing black lava that cools quickly and looks like dark water.

Located near Lake Natron, a surreal soda lake home to thousands of flamingos, this climb is as much about cultural immersion and natural wonder as it is about adventure. The climb is steep, challenging, and unforgettable — a true pilgrimage for hikers, geology lovers, and spiritual seekers alike.

“Climbing the Mountain of God is not just a journey up a volcano — it’s a step into the sacred heart of the Rift Valley.”

FULL day to day itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Lake Natron – Waterfall & Lake Walk

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha through the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, pass Maasai villages, dry savannahs, and otherworldly volcanic terrain. Arrive at Lake Natron Camp and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, hike to the Ngare Sero Waterfall, a refreshing cascade tucked into a narrow gorge. Be prepared to get your feet wet as you walk along streams and scramble over rocks.

Before sunset, head to the lakeshore for photography and flamingo viewing — Lake Natron’s salty waters create a vivid, alien-like landscape that’s incredibly photogenic.

Overnight: Lake Natron Camp or similar
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

At around 1:00 AM, your trek begins under a starlit sky. Guided by torchlight, ascend the steep volcanic slopes of Ol Doinyo Lengai. The path is rugged and requires strong fitness and mental grit, but the reward is immense.

Reach the crater rim at sunrise, where you may hear the bubbling of lava inside the crater. Views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and the vast expanse of the Rift Valley await.

After a cautious descent, your driver will greet you with refreshments. Return to camp for a quick shower and lunch before the drive back to Arusha.
