About Lake Natron

Discover Lake Natron

Lake Natron feels like another planet. This salty, red-tinged soda lake near the Kenyan border is the most important breeding ground in the world for lesser flamingos. Above it rises Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Maasai “Mountain of God” and an active volcano.

Days here are about walking rather than driving: hike up a river gorge to the Ngare Sero waterfall, stroll with Maasai guides to see the flamingos and ancient human footprints, or take on the challenging night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
