Packing for a safari is easier than you think. You will spend most days in a vehicle, and many lodges offer laundry. The key is light layers, neutral colours and a soft bag. Here is what our guides recommend.
Clothing
- 3-4 lightweight shirts or T-shirts in neutral colours (khaki, beige, olive).
- 2 pairs of comfortable trousers and 1 pair of shorts.
- A warm fleece or jacket – mornings and the Ngorongoro rim are cold.
- A light rain jacket in the green season.
- Sun hat, sunglasses and a buff or scarf for dust.
- Comfortable closed shoes and sandals for camp.
Avoid dark blue and black (they attract tsetse flies) and camouflage prints, which are not allowed in Tanzania.
Gear
- Binoculars – one pair per person if possible.
- Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards.
- Universal power adapter (Type G/D) and a power bank.
- Head torch for camp.
- Reusable water bottle.
Health and toiletries
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and lip balm.
- Insect repellent with DEET or picaridin.
- Any prescribed medication, including anti-malarials.
- Small first-aid kit and hand sanitiser.
Documents
- Passport valid for 6+ months, and your visa.
- Yellow fever certificate if required.
- Travel insurance details.
- Some US dollar notes printed 2013 or later for tips.
Luggage tip
If you are flying between parks or to Zanzibar, small aircraft usually allow 15 kg per person in a soft bag, including hand luggage. We can store extra luggage in Arusha while you are on safari.
